Getting Started

Your first step (whether you're a current CLA or prospective student) is to attend an Info Session. If you don't know whether an individualized degree program is right for you, we'll give you information to help you decide. If you already know that a BIS or IDIM program is right for you, the Info Session will give you the detailed information that's necessary to begin designing your program and getting it approved.

Once you have attended an info session and have a draft of a complete course worksheet, you can meet with a BIS/IDIM adviser in either walk-in hours or in an appointment to fill out a BIS or IDIM Major Declaration Form. On this form you will indicate your proposed areas of concentration (3 for BIS, 3 or 4 for IDIM).You and the BIS/IDIM adviser sign the BIS or IDIM Major Declaration Form, and then you file this form with your CLA Student Community advising office.Once the major declaration is filed, a registration hold will be placed on your record the following semester that requires you to meet with a BIS/IDIM adviser prior to each registration until you have completed the program approval process.

In your first appointment, the BIS/IDIM advisor will help you establish a plan for preparing your program proposal. Bring to this appointment any writing, course lists, or possible areas of concentration that will help us become familiar with your interests. Keep in mind that most students have three to six appointments with a BIS/IDIM advisor before their program proposal is ready for formal submission. Before your first appointment with a BIS/IDIM adviser:
  • Look over your transcript to identify courses you have taken that might be included in your BIS or IDIM program.
  • Make a list of possible areas of concentration.
  • Find courses in the course catalog that are related to your interests.
  • For IDIM, articulate your thematic focus and a possible program title.

We encourage you to write a paragraph or more about:

  • why you would like to pursue an individualized program
  • the areas of concentration you are considering
  • the general theme or issues to be explored in your program.

To schedule an appointment, please call 612/624-8006.
