TONI MILLER
Fall 2004 B.I.S. graduate with areas of concentration in Communication Studies, Philosophy, and English and a minor in Psychology.
WHAT SHE'S DOING NOW…
I was hired by American Express Financial Advisors as a Marketing Coordinator and Trainer.
I plan to do this for two to three years while paying off some of my student loans and saving money. Then I hope to go to graduate school to pursue a PhD and become a professor in the field of Social Psychology. I worked on an anti-obesity campaign as my senior project and am currently working on continuing this research through a non-profit organization.
I am also currently a research assistant to the Social Psychology department at the University of Minnesota. I am also involved in a non-profit that helps talent in the modeling, acting and singing industries become educated and protected from dishonest predators.
HOW EMPLOYERS HAVE REACTED TO HER B.I.S….
Since I graduated, I have had a large amount of interviews and as far as employers are concerned, I have found that they not only look upon a B.I.S. degree favorably, but I have found it to be advantageous. In today's business world a person has to be extremely well-rounded and be able to wear many hats to succeed. Earning a B.I.S. degree shows that the candidate not only knows what he/she wants out of their educational experience, but he/she is assertive enough to find a way to tailor one's degree to his/her interests. Additionally, I feel a B.I.S. embodies the spirit of the University of Minnesota. To succeed, a student must be independent, focused and a go-getter. I feel that earning a B.I.S. degree, along with my many other experiences during college, has made me an extremely well-rounded individual.
ADVICE…
I would encourage students to take a close look at the B.I.S. degree. I would advise them to find areas that they are extremely passionate about and use them as their areas of concentration. I would also suggest they pursue activities such as volunteer work, internships/employment and research experience that compliments these areas of concentration.
