Introduction to Individualized Degree Programs (IDP) An individualized degree in CLA offers: An interactive advising and planning process that involves the student, individualized degree programs advisors and departmental advisors. A program that asks students to explore and articulate relevant knowledge about themselves (interests, strengths, abilities) and about academic disciplines and to use this knowledge to make thoughtful educational and curricular choices. A program approval process that demands a level of commitment and engagement on the student's part that is not generally required in carrying out a regular major. The increased flexibility of the program means increased responsibility. Students are expected to: Develop and express their ideas in writing. Be prepared to do research and find answers about their program. Tolerate ambiguity—general guidelines exist, but details often need to be sorted out for each student's plan. Communicate effectively with their individualized degree advisors and departmental advisors and come prepared for advising appointments. Follow up on tasks by writing and revising the proposal in a timely manner and consulting with departments as needed. Be proactive—because the student manages the process this is not a program well-suited for students who are passive participants in their education.
